Chiefly letters from Albert, 1856-1857 and 1869-1887, to his parents describing his activities, some letters from Charles, 1813-1884, and George, 1856 and 1894, to family members. Topics include steamship and ferry business, descriptions of the Los Angeles area and the ranch of Don Pio Pico, and the local Vigilante Committees' activities. Also present is an autobiography by George about his ferry and steamship experiences.

Two generations; Charles, ca. 1795-1844, was a hatter, member of the Texan Santa Fe Expedition, and one of a party of Santa Fe traders captured by Mexican authorities. His nephews, George Alonzo Johnson and Albert J. Johnson, worked a ferry and steamship company on the Colorado River. Albert became a lawyer and business manager for Don Pio Pico.
